Two-Spirit patients consistently report difficulty accessing competent healthcare. Indigenous populations are frequently left out of research, resulting in a poor understanding of people’s healthcare needs. And in a clinical setting, systemic racism and intergenerational mistrust of the public healthcare system can even prevent some from seeking out care in the first place. But clinics, researchers and practitioners can help to break this cycle, by learning to provide the care that Indigiqueer and Two-Spirit patients actually need.
Jaylene Mcrae is a the Two-Spirit Research Coordinator at the Community-Based Research center in Vancouver. She spoke with Script about how to begin to repair harm, and build a standard of care that is culturally safe for Two-Spirit folks.
